Qualified Disabled and Working Individuals (QDMI)

Qualified Disabled and Working Individuals (QDWI) is a program that helps certain individuals who have a disability and are working, but cannot afford to pay for the full cost of their Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) premiums.

To be eligible for QDWI, an individual must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a disability and be receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or certain disability-related Railroad Retirement benefits
  • Have a Medicare Part A premium withheld from their Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or certain disability-related Railroad Retirement benefits
  • Have limited income and resources

The program pays for the individual's Part A premium, which is a cost that is usually covered by Social Security. The program is designed to help people who are working and earning a salary, but still cannot afford to pay for the full cost of their Medicare Part A premium.

Individuals who are eligible for QDWI can apply through the Social Security Administration (SSA) and their state Medicaid agency. It's important to note that the QDWI program is only available in certain states, and the eligibility rules and benefits can vary by state.
